Stock Symbol (Ticker)
A Stock Symbol is a depiction of a company’s name on the stock exchange. Also called stock tickers or just tickers they are usually made up of letters, but some exchanges use numbers or an alphanumeric combination.
When companies get listed on exchanges they have to choose a corresponding ticker symbol for their shares. Traders began shortening company names to make it easier to communicate information about the stocks on the stock floor. This became especially helpful with companies that had similar names.
Stock classes can also be denoted in tickers, by adding PR for preferred stocks, A or B for the different classes of stocks.
